On the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

An evening of commemoration:

a mix of narration, images of cinema, music and art

• The event will kick off at 5 PM with the Art Exhibition featuring paintings, sculptures and ceramics by Armenian artists: Gerard Orakian (1901-1963), Nwarth Zarian (1917-2005), Teresa Sargsyan, Gevorg Machanents, Anastasia Chaikovskaia, Endza / Gevorg Babakhanyan, Laura Pogosyan and Elisabetta Moktarians. A collection of works that combines past and present, creating a mosaic of different art forms.

• The event will continue at 6 PM with the presentation of the book ‘Ravished Armenia’ by the journalist, writer and translator Letizia Leonardi. Zara Pogossian (University of Florence) will moderate the discussion.

At the center of the event is the extraordinary story of Aurora Mardiganian, a survivor of the Armenian Genocide. Having arrived in the United States at the age of seventeen in 1918, Aurora wrote a book of a shocking testimony, which in 1919 was made into the Hollywood film ‘Ravished Armenia’. Her story is the inspiration behind the internationally acclaimed documentary ‘Aurora’s Sunrise’ (2022) by Inna Sahakyan.

• The evening will close with the Concert of Armenian Classical Music at 7:30 PM.

A musical tribute to the rich cultural heritage of a people who have been able to transform pain into beauty. The musicians Natalia Pogosyan (piano) and Alexei Doulov (violin) will perform famous pieces by great Armenian composers of the twentieth century, including Komitas, Aram Khachaturian, Eduard Baghdasaryan, Arno Babadjanian and Avet Terteryan.

The concert will feature a short performance by the young talents Artashes Mosikyan and Hayk Giulhakyan, who are in Italy on the occasion of their participation in the Orbetello International Piano Competition. They will offer the public a sample of their interpretative skill.

The evening will take place in the unique setting of the Aula Magna Valdese, embellished by the splendid stained glass windows of the master Paolo Paschetto, among the varied works of Armenian artists, in an atmosphere of memory, art and hope.

• Darà l’inizio alle ore 17:00

L’Esposizione d'arte con opere di pittura, scultura e ceramica di artisti armeni: Gerard Orakian (1901-1963), Nwarth Zarian (1917-2005), Teresa Sargsyan, Gevorg Machanents, Anastasia Chaikovskaia, Endza / Gevorg Babakhanyan, Laura Pogosyan e Elisabetta Moktarians. Una raccolta di opere che coniuga passato e presente componendo un mosaico di diversi linguaggi artistici.

• Si proseguirà alle ore 18:00 con:

La Presentazione del libro Armenia Violata, a cura della giornalista, scrittrice e traduttrice Letizia Leonardi. A dialogare con l'autrice sarà Zara Pogossian (Università di Firenze).

Al centro dell’incontro, la straordinaria storia di Aurora Mardiganian, sopravvissuta al genocidio, che, arrivata 17enne negli Stati Uniti nel 1918, affidò la sua testimonianza a un libro sconvolgente, poi portato anche sul grande schermo nel 1919 con il film hollywoodiano Ravished Armenia. La sua storia ha recentemente ispirato il docu-film Aurora’s Sunrise (2022) di Inna Sahakyan, premiato a livello internazionale.

• A chiusura della serata alle ore 19:30 — Il Concerto di Musica Classica Armena

Un omaggio musicale al ricco patrimonio culturale di un popolo che ha saputo trasformare il dolore in bellezza.

I musicisti Natalia Pogosyan (pianoforte) e Alexei Doulov (violino) eseguiranno celebri brani di grandi compositori armeni del Novecento: Komitas, Aram Khachaturian, Eduard Baghdasaryan, Arno Babadjanian e Avet Terteryan.

Il concerto sarà impreziosito da un breve intervento dei giovanissimi pianisti Artashes Mosikyan e Hayk Giulhakyan, presenti in Italia in occasione della loro partecipazione all’Orbetello International Piano Competition, che offriranno al pubblico un saggio della loro bravura interpretativa.
