AGBU Toronto has the great pleasure of introducing Dr. Araxie Altounian’s twelfth guest on Musical Minds, cellist-composer Karen Ouzounian. Sought after for her “radiant” (The New York Times) performances full of “tremendous heart, bringing joy and a captivating sound to the stage” (The Strad), Ouzounian is a GRAMMY®-nominated cellist and composer who champions and creates a remarkable breadth of music with fierce commitment and emotional power. Ouzounian will walk us through her unconventional career exploring new territories with colleagues from different backgrounds, including her collaboration with the Aizuri Quartet of which she was the founding cellist, the Silk Road Ensemble and its founder, world-renowned cellist Yo Yo Ma, as well as composer Lembit Beecher with whom she co-composed Dear Mountains and Mayrig, two monumental works that relate her family’s stories of migration through several generations.
Musical Minds is a series of online conversations with established Armenian musicians who contribute to Armenian musical culture in unique and innovative ways and build bridges between the Armenian diaspora and the host societies. These Zoom conversations are hosted by AGBU Toronto, broadcast live on its Facebook page, and will be recorded for future viewing.
