Klingen Choir and Cultural Association in cooperation with St Sarkis Church Parish presents audio-visual lecture “Armenian Classical Music before and after the Genocide” by lecturer maestro Sipan Olah at the Gulbenkian Hall followed by a concert by Klingen Vocal Quartet at the St Sarkis church.

This unique lecture will present Armenian Classical Music from the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. It is dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide which is one of the most important events that all Armenians and the world respect and remember. Armenian Classical music is based on folk. Sipan Olah will present Armenian composers such as Tigran Chukhajyan, Kristapor Kara-Murza, Makar Ekmalyan, Komitas and many others and their most valuable and priceless work in collecting the Armenian folk music from the entire historic land of Armenia before the 1915 Genocide and arranging these tunes for the professional ensembles uplifting Armenian Classical music to the European Standards. We would have forever lost the chance to know Armenian unique musical traditions without the dedication to preserving Armenian folk music before the Armenian Genocide.

During the lecture based on his research, maestro Sipan Olah will talk about each composer, choir, orchestra and musicians from that time, presenting historic photos, videos and recordings. The lecture will be followed by a concert performed by the Klingen Vocal Quartet acapella, presenting pieces by these Armenian composers.

Free refreshments after the lecture at the Gulbenkian Hall.

This event is supported by the Saint Sarkis Charity Trust.
