Born in Gyumri, raised in Artsakh, and now based in Yerevan, Jivan Avetisyan is a filmmaker whose work is shaped by lived experience. In his career, he has directed more than 20 documentaries, shorts, and features, including TEVANIK, THE LAST INHABITANT, and GATE TO HEAVENN— each grounded in real human stories from Artsakh.

Jivan Avetisyan's forthcoming feature, REVIVAL, is an exploration of war, memory, and the evolution of artificial intelligence. The film unfolds during the 2020 Artsakh War and the global pandemic, and imagines AI as a developing consciousness shaped by human experience. REVIVAL recently completed post-production and is set for release in 2026. The international cast includes Armand Assante, Maia Morgenstern, Heino Ferch, Robin Hairabian, Clémence Baudouin, Babken Chobanyan, and Narine Petrosyan.

What should you expect from this masterclass?

Jivan Avetisyan will explore a range of topics, including a brief overview of his personal and professional journey; how lived experience transforms into cinematic storytelling; a case study of REVIVAL; maintaining creative vision when funding or politics intervene; navigating the challenges of international co-productions; and the tension between festival expectations and truth-telling. The session will also include an exclusive screening of a clip from the film, followed by an open discussion.
