KURO and CAPS Productions present RASHOMON, by Fay and Michael Kanin, based on the Japanese director Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece film of the same name, in turn adapted from a combination of two short stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa (1892-1927).
This is a hugely entertaining drama, with a lot of humor as well. And it is an unusual “who-dunnit?” besides.
The Story and the Theme:
A Man—a Samurai—is killed and his wife ‘raped’ in a forest in Japan. They capture the notorious bandit Tajomaru, who seems to admit that he killed the man. So the case seems resolved. But no! Three more and very different versions of the same events are told—and in a Police Court no less! Was it murder? If yes, who did it? And the rape?
Who or what are we to believe? This has become known as the "Rashomon Phenomenon".
