Memoirs of a Stranger is the definitive non-fiction account of the hunt and successful execution of Tala'at Pasha, a key figure responsible for the Armenian Genocide. Authored by Shahan Natalie. The book chronicles his role as the leader of a reluctant, under-resourced team of Armenian-German operatives who carried out the mission in the shadows of post-WWI Europe.
Natalie’s firsthand narrative offers unprecedented insight into the planning, dangers, and moral conviction that defined this act of justice. Had the mission failed, the survival of Armenia may have been permanently erased, and Tala’at—not Mustafa Kemal—might have emerged as the founder of modern Turkey. This memoir is a personal testimony and a reflection on accountability and national resilience.
This special presentation of Memoirs of a Stranger will be led by Ara K. Manoogian, the final student and grandson of Shahan Natalie. Manoogian will share unique insights passed down directly through the family and mentor-student bond.
In addition to presenting the book, he will discuss the current crisis in Armenia and Artsakh, the flawed peace proposals being circulated today, and the urgent lessons from Natalie’s time that must guide our collective response. This is more than a book talk—it is a call to remembrance, resistance, and action for the future of the Armenian people.
Shahan Natalie was a renowned Armenian writer, political strategist, and the President of the Armenian Diaspora Writers Union. He is most remembered as the mastermind behind the execution of Tala'at Pasha—the chief architect of the Armenian Genocide—carried out under the directive of Armenia’s Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Garegin Pastermadjian. Acting under the authority of the Ottoman military court’s death sentence and the principles of the 1907 Hague Convention Laws of War, Natalie led a mission that changed the course of world history. His writings and actions remain a powerful testament to justice, resistance, and national survival.
